My first book is ten years old this year. It’s been a wild ride. I seriously wrote it thinking “no one would ever read it anyway.” My old hometown free weekly recently featured I Was a Teenage Dominatrix in its book club; the results can be found here. Nice to see my little book still gets some press and is even still in print, thanks to my publishers and anyone whose ever given it their time. Feeling full of gratitude this morning…

Imposters phenomenon

supermanSee? I’m not the only one who has been obsessed with those street performers on Hollywood Boulevard. The latest coverage of them (since my book, Imposters) is Rena LeBlanc’s article in this month’s Discover Hollywood magazine. The pic to the left is of Christopher Dennis, who portrays Superman on the Boulevard–at home, among his collection (Photo taken by Jim Knoblauch).

Christopher has been on the Boulevard the longest of all of the superheroes. He is the wise, grandfatherly figure to most of the other characters. He and his girlfriend Bonnie are consummate collectors; when I visited, a giant wide-screen TV blaring a Disney movie filled one wall of their one-bedroom apartment—every other floor-to-ceiling square inch (including the bathroom) was filled with toys and Superman paraphernalia. Chris showed me a huge collection of celebrity autographs, and albums full of pictures of his tanned, shirtless self out on fishing boats off the coast of Long Beach, in his pre-Superman days. He has done some modeling for high-end fashion magazines as both Clark Kent and Superman. He and Bonnie are kind of romantic in their shared obsession, really. They were very sweet people. Some of the other characters were not as friendly, or had complaints about the book once it was out. Oh well.

Book Cake

cake-book1Artists have been known to struggle and writers, especially, can lead a lonely existence due to the very nature of our work. Somehow I got lucky and have the bestest friends in the whole world. My friend Carol Brown surprised me at my recent reading in Richmond by bringing this gorgeous confectionary version of my book, Imposters! It was vegan chocolate raspberry inside…and delicious. Amazing.

Richmond Press

Imposters by Shawna KenneyOnce in awhile a journalist comes along who actually takes the time to read your work and ask you good questions. Yay for Valley Haggard & Style Weekly for the nice pre-show press for this Friday’s reading. Yes, I am torturing myself by reading in public again, but I am looking forward to hanging with friends and visiting the fair city of Richmond again. Growing up in DC, RVA is were we escaped sometimes for shows–I mean, they had Gwar! And the Metro! And The Rocket! And, later, Avail! It’s been awhile since I had a good roadtrip.

Writing Workshop Baltimore

danish-desert1I will be co-teaching a writing workshop in Baltimore with friend & fellow writer Cara Bruce. I taught a similar 6-week workshop in Wilmington, NC where the focus was on nonfiction. The advantage of teaching with Cara is that she’ll bring her fiction and editorial expertise into the mix; she has run a small publishing company of her own, published lots of fiction and edited numerous anthologies. Our belief is that life stories can be molded into memoir, essays or fiction–why limit yourself by genre? My hope is that students will benefit from our feedback as well as that of a supportive writing community.

This workshop runs from April 1st – May 6th. Details about payment and location are all here on our new site. We’ll be offering an online workshop soon, for those not in our immediate area! Yippee!
