Robot Hearts: Call for Submissions

paper planeI’m co-editing the anthology Robot Hearts: Twisted and True Tales of Seeking Love in the Digital Age with Cara Bruce. While I haven’t dated since 1995 (when I met my darling husband) and didn’t date much before that (punk rock makes you socially retarded), I live vicariously through other peoples’ stories. Submission guidelines are here. Thanks to my friend Tony Mech for the cute robot image.

James River Writers Series

imagesWord up to my Richmond crew! The James River Writers Series has invited me to speak on a panel called Me, Myself & I: Writing the Memoir on August 27th, and with the lovely and talented Anne Thomas Soffee, no less. I am so excited to travel to the RVA again, and to meet the author of Nerd Girl Rocks Paradise City. It feels as if she may have had the metal parallel experience of my punk one; plus she’s a writer, so I suspect a kindred spirit there. I hope I’m right. Details about the date are here.

Inked Mag

Slayer TattsI’ve always wanted to be in a tattoo mag, and now I can say I have had the honor of appearing in Inked Magazine’s “Inked for a Cause” section. I kinda feel like a poser because none of my tattoos are really ’cause-related,’ but hey, if I can spotlight some of my favorite organizations or causes in the press, who cares, right? Plus Mark Mahoney, Juan Puente and Chris O’Donnell, some of my favorite artists, get shout-outs, too.

Girls, Grrrls, Gurls

girls-marching-homeJust did my first guest-blog on Girl With Pen—a review of Kirsten Holmstedt’s book, The Girls Come Marching Home. I still hate this stupid war and don’t think we should be in it, but I had no idea that women-in-combat was considered an “experiment” and still controversial for some. Anyway, felt like I learned a lot from this book and loved writing about it for a feminist website. It felt like the intersection of things that don’t usually come together, which is always exciting.

new anthology

Hos Hookers JPGMy piece, “Seven Minutes with Stripper #2″ has been published in the new anthology, Hos, Hookers, Callgirls and Rentboys on Soft Skull Press! Although I have never worked any of the jobs in the title, my essay is about my encounter with and empathy for a male dancer at a bachelorette party. After working in the sex industry as a dominatrix and stripper myself (briefly), it’s hard to see such performances as anything more than paying gigs. I do consider myself sex-positive, pro-legalization of adult sex work and without judgment of whatever two (or more) consenting adults want to do. It’s just that for me, the magic was gone after the assistant learned the magician’s tricks, so-to-speak. Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading work by others in the book, and meeting some of my fellow contributors at the release party in NYC on October 1st! Come see me! (Gosh, why does everything sound like a bad pun now?)

Spring for Poetry

Poetry, as stumbled upon during another bike ride! Apparently this is part of a program sponsored by the Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library, who, back in April, “planted” poems around the city. This one caught me off-guard and made me happy on a night when life was looking a little dim. We could all use a little more poetry in our lives, couldn’t we?

Dharma Punk

IMG_3593I had the pleasure of interviewing designer/activist Heidi Minx again, this time for BustedHalo.com. I admire all she’s doing with her project, Built on Respect. She is sharing her business savvy with Tibetan refugees and others in India, demonstrating something that Joe Strummer once said: “Punk rock means exemplary manners to your fellow human beings.” Please read, get inspired and pass it on!
