Twying to Twitter

twitter1

I’m twying out this Twitter thing. I think it means I’m “tweeting.” All the Ts make it tempting to talk like Sylvester the Cat for some reason, but I will resist. Can’t say that I fully understand how this is supposed to work yet; right now it just looks like a bunch of people chasing each other in a circle, but hey, what do I know? If you want writing-related news, quotes and info on cool calls for submissions, follow my company @LABBooks. If you want to know what’s on my mind or keep track of my upcoming appearances and published work, follow me @shawnakenney.  Who knows? Tawking twoughout the day might be TWEET! (Sorry).

Richmond is for Lovers (of the written word)

Just returned from Richmond, where I spoke on a panel of authors about the rewards and perils of memoir writing. I was in great company–authors Anne Thomas Soffee and Rodney Lofton spoke from their hearts about their experiences with this particularly dangerous form of creative nonfiction–with an audience of around 90 kindred souls. It didn’t hurt to have my husband and dear friend-with-cupcakes Carol Brown in the audience (she came bearing these vegan sugary gifts. I know. I’m spoiled!) Staying at an inn directly across the Richmond library and wandering the former hometown of Edgar Allen Poe were the cherries on top of a truly delightful event. Thank you to the James River Writers and The Writing Show! Richmond’s a real class act and I’m a lucky girl.

NY Times Book Review

Hos Hookers JPGWow. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls and Rent Boys: Professionals Writing on Life, Love, Money and Sex made the cover of the Sunday NY Times Book Review…and it’s a great, thoughtful review! (My story’s in the ‘Money’ section, by the way). I am honored to be in this collection, speaking truthfully with a bunch of fine, brave writers about the big business of sex. It’ll be interesting to watch the fallout and read the comments after the paper hits. My hope is that it sparks discussion about an often ignored and degraded (yet vital!) part of our society. I no longer work in this industry but I don’t think it should be demonized the way it usually is.

My favorite part of Ms. Bentley’s NY Times review is at the end: “This collection is a wonderful reminder that good writing is not about knowing words, grammar or Faulkner, but having that rare ability to tell the truth, an ability that education and sophistication often serve to conceal. While we are all, I suppose, in the business of surviving, some really are surviving more notably than others. The collective cry for identity found in this unsentimental compilation will resonate deeply — even, I suspect, with those among us who pretend not to pay for sex.”

I’m an ebook author now!

iwatd2I Was a Teenage Dominatrix came out exactly 10 years ago. Fortunately I’ve been with an indie publisher who has kept it in print all of this time, and it has sold well for an indie, but who knows how much longer I can expect it to be in print (until a TV show is made or something…?), so I’ve opted to send it into the world in ebook form. I don’t know how many people are actually downloading and reading ebooks at this point, but the thought of reaching a new, worldwide audience is exciting! Buying the book in this form is greener (no trees being killed for paper) and also circumvents corporations getting a cut, which is great for any artist. If this experiment works out well, I’ll be releasing future books in this way! Check me out on smashwords here, where you can sneak a free peek.
