Writers are Eavesdroppers

Awhile ago on Facebook, I shared a sad interaction overheard in the K-mart Barbie aisle. Benn Ray of Atomic Books/Mutant Funnies asked if he could use it in his “Overheards” column, which runs in the Baltimore Sun offshoot paper, “B.” The result is the brilliantly illustrated piece below. Kate Haberer‘s astute interpretation emphasizes the irony of the mother’s admonishment. I just love these things! You can order a whole book of them here.

Roaming Writers Baltimore

dito-skylight-4The coolest thing about being in my old stomping grounds (the DC/Baltimore area) has been reconnecting with old friends–from crazy skinheads-turned-artists to addicts-gone-sober and punks-who-went-corporate, it’s been a kaleidoscope of surprises so far. Cara Bruce, editor of Viscera and author of many many stories, who I met in San Francisco, is now based in Baltimore. Dito Montiel, author of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, who I know from LA, happens to be in Virginia Beach for a little while, so…we put our heads together and came up with a couple of shows (I like to think of it as a ‘mini-tour’) we’ll be doing in this area soon. To the left is a pic of Dito from our reading at Skylight Books last August. March 14th we’ll all be at Mina’s Gallery in Bmore, but look at the ‘events’ page for full details. Cara & I will also be offering a local workshop, soon…very soon.
